Data Visualization and Design

Course Description

Grounded in an interdisciplinary, critical, and creative approach to data studies, the M.S.in Data Analysis and Visualization teaches students to analyze, interpret, and visualize data. In their coursework, students learn the fundamentals of working with data, explore multiple ways to visualize data in interactive forms, investigate the principles of graphic design, use statistics to analyze data, and connect their work to issues of data ethics.

The program’s multidisciplinary faculty and innovative approach to scholarship and teaching allow students to gain a broad understanding of data analysis and visualization. Three areas of study—Data Analysis, Data Study, and Data Visualization—offer learning paths that leverage the longstanding culture of social activism at The Graduate Center to discover the social nuances of big data. As students learn to think critically and historically about contemporary methods and techniques for working with data, they also learn to create stories by taking heterogeneous information and weaving them together into meaningful narratives.
